Challenge the practice is addressing: This practice aims to address problems which a lot of countries deal with: unsafe dams due to seismic activities. This project examines underlying processes and relevant safety parameters of water reservoirs to develop transferable monitoring concepts for dams in technologically active regions.
Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: The project will investigate which hazards arise during the operation of the water reservoir and how they can be reduced by using innovative monitoring processes and by using model scenarios for the spatial and temporal development of seismicity. One of the aims of this projects is to develop an early warning system to support decision-making.
Expected impact/goal of the practice: The goal of this project to ensure long-term efficient operation at water reservoirs by systematically reducing hazards and induced seismicity at the facilities. These goals will be achieved through the collection of relevant data and the application of innovative methods. To implement suitable monitoring concepts and the usage of early warning systems will help to reduce the risk to the population.
Who is the target user group of the practice/intervention or implementing the practice/intervention? This practice is relevant for both public policy and industry contexts.
