When to communicate with locals

  • Health and safety
  • Land-use planning
  • Permitting processes / policy integration
  • Reporting official statistics
  • Socio-economic and environmental impact assessments

Challenge the practice is addressing: While the impacts from exploration differ significantly from mining, managing stakeholder expectations are still important.

Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: Managing expectations and uncertainty is best achieved by giving timely and relevant information to the local actors and decision-makers and engaging in a dialogue with them from the very beginning of the mineral exploration activities. Additional guidance is mentioned, for example the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) (e3 Plus: A Framework for Responsible Exploration) and the Finnish Nework for Sustainable Mining's toolkit for stakeholder engagement in 2015.
