Challenge the practice is addressing: Sweden's industries have a common need for reliable electricity in their efforts to adapt to climate change. Boliden has allowed a smart battery storage facility to be installed at the Bergsöe smelter in order to contribute to securing the country's electricity supply.
Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: Boliden is conducting a two-year research project with Vattenfall and Landskrona Energi, with support from the Swedish Energy Agency, that has resulted in the installation of a battery storage facility at Boliden's Bergsöe plant in Landskrona. The project's goal is to look into how a battery storage facility can secure electricity supply for industries, for example, while also lowering electricity costs for customers.
Expected impact/goal of the practice: As society's demand for electricity grows, solutions for storing and using it become increasingly important. During power outages caused by temporary high consumption, the battery can support both local and regional grids. The smart battery is also versatile in that it can store fossil-free electricity when prices are low and use it when demand is high, lowering electricity costs. The battery has an output of 500 kW and a storage capacity of 1 MWh, equivalent to around 24 electric car batteries.
