Communication and interaction between companies and local communities

  • Health and safety
  • Land-use planning
  • Permitting processes / policy integration
  • Reporting official statistics
  • Socio-economic and environmental impact assessments

Challenge the practice is addressing: The practice is addressing the need for communication between local actors and company stakeholders in order to obtain and maintain a Social License to Operate. It is further a good approach to prevent any sort of conflict regarding mineral exploration.

Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: Establishing a communication basis between key community stakeholders and company representatives at an early stage of the mineral exploration. The Social License to Operate should therefore include five independent variables such as procedural fairness, contact quantity and quality, impacts of the infrastructure and trust.

Expected impact/goal of the practice: The expected impact is not only to create a good and stable dialogue between key community stakeholders and company representatives but also to just keep them informed about happening at the mine site but also make them feel heard and listened to. Rather focusing on quality instead of quantity.

Who is the target user group of the practice/intervention or implementing the practice/intervention? The practice is relevant for both the industry and local stakeholders.
