United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC)

  • Health and safety
  • Land-use planning
  • Permitting processes / policy integration
  • Reporting official statistics
  • Socio-economic and environmental impact assessments

Challenge the practice is addressing: The United Nations Framework Classification for Resources as practice is tackling the lack of harmonised data at European level. This practice is not meant to replace national systems but rather to add it rather thought of as central point for EU level compilation.

Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: The UNFC system divides between three fundamental criteria/dimensions: economic and social viability, project status and feasibility and uncertainty. The created data standards are employed in on-going or developing mining projects at listed companies to compare resources and reserves at the EU level.

Expected impact/goal of the practice: The general goal is to create a harmonized non-comparable standard and reporting system for mineral inventories which will combine national and international data for the purpose of developing mineral policies and planning. These data standards are employed in on-going or developing mining projects at listed companies. This system overcomes the issue of multiple non-comparable resources and reserves at the EU level.

Who is the target user group of the practice/intervention or implementing the practice/intervention? The practice is relevant for both policy makers and industry representatives
