Challenge the practice is addressing: The practice provides policy and operational level recommendations to support the improvement of sustainability assessment and Social Licence to operate activities in the European extractives industry.
Concrete practice to achieve the expected goal: The practice has been developed to identify the common challenges in the fields of 1) sustainability assessment and 2) effective communication between the industry and stakeholders in mining operations, and to provide policy level recommendations to support improvement of practices in these fields. The policy recommendations developed include: raising awareness of the three sustainability dimensions, understanding local contexts as a key aspect of sustainability in mining operations, promotion of life cycle thinking tools in sustainability assessments, creating public repositories for mining-related data for sustainability assessment and improving community-industry communication to achieve and maintain SLO. Furthermore, detailed recommendations for future mining projects are given.
Expected impact/goal of the practice: The expected impact of the practice is to support sustainable raw materials sourcing and develop Social Licence to Operate activities between the industry and stakeholders.
